Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious!
Submitted on: 2009-10-16
Richard M. Sherman and Robert Sherman were the writers who bestowed on Disney a number of songs that have long become icons, such as "Winnie the Pooh, "A Spoonful of Sugar," "Chitty Chitty Bang Bang," and "Chim Chim Cher-ee." Sophisticated in their smplicity, the songs carry a universal charm that extends well beyond a children's audience. These warm, solo guitar (and occasional group) renditions of these otherwise well-worn tunes prove the strength of a great melody. When topped with the popping arrangements of finger-stylists such as Tommy Emmanuel or Lawrence Juber (Paul McCartney's guitarist), the results are, well, supercalifragilisticexpialidocious. The 2-disc version includes an accompanying DVD of an interesting discussion centered on Emmanuel's typical one-man band take on "Winnie the Pooh."
A Must Have!

This is an amazing and beautiful collection of songs by the Sherman Brothers played on acoustic guitar by some of the most talented guitarists in the world.

"This supercalifragilistic album is something that I will treasure forever!" --Richard M. Sherman

I really couldn't say it any better.

I received the CD/DVD combo of the release for review and I have been completely enchanted by it; soul-stirring, emotional and up-beat versions of the irrefutable classics from the movies and the theme parks. I have had the CD playing in the background and I constantly catch myself stopping to enjoy the songs and hum along. Even without the words, these 15 songs are so ingrained in my psyche that they feel like they are part of me. The recordings offered on the CD only heighten the beauty and the romance of the Sherman Brothers' masterpieces.

Before we head further, you need to know the songs:
Winnie The Pooh - Tommy Emmanuel
A Spoonful Of Sugar - Laurence Juber
Hushabye Mountain - Al Petteway
There's A Great Big Beautiful Tomorrow - Kenny Sultan
You're Sixteen - Greg Hawkes
Feed The Birds (Tuppence A Bag) - Doug Smith
Chitty Chitty Bang Bang - Mark Hanson
Let's Get Together - Pat Donohue
The Slipper And The Rose Waltz - Jim Tozier
Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious - Eltjo Haselhoff
The Age Of Not Believing - Elliot Easton
I Wan'na Be Like You - Mike Dowling
Chim Chim Cher-ee - Nick Charles
Stay Awake - Tim Pacheco
It's A Small World - Doug Smith and Mark Hanson
There is something for everyone on the CD!

The acoustic guitar is a very personal instrument and the talent of the guitarists is evident. It is obvious that they love the songs that they are performing. The skills of the recording engineer are evident--you can feel the timbre of the instruments. It is a beautiful recording.

Some of the songs evoke a more romantic feeling while others are more upbeat and charming. It is hard for me to pull out a favorite recording--if you look at the track listing, most of them are well-loved classics. The spin provided by the individual guitarists only adds to the lush beauty of the compositions.

I had the opportunity to ask the producer, James Jensen a few questions about the project.
GT: What was the impetus behind the collection?
JJ: Our label (Solid Air Records) has featured arrangements by other composers in the past and most notably won a GRAMMY for our Henry Mancini: Pink Guitar CD for Pop instrumental album of the Year! My co-producer , Bernadette Bowman suggested that we try The Sherman brothers.
GT: How did you choose the guitarists?

JJ: In some cases I tried to match players to the material , for example the tunes You're Sixteen and The Age of Not Believing, which were brilliantly arranged and played by former members of THE CARS, Greg Hawkes and Elliot Easton, just didn't seem like "solo" numbers but tracks/songs which required a bit more. Many songs were chosen by the artists like Tommy Emmanuel asking for Winnie the Pooh because of the special place it has in his heart as something he shares with his daughter.

GT: How did you choose the other songs?

JJ: There were many that were obvious choices...but we also relied on Richard to tell us what he felt necessary and we wanted to represent not only Disney movies, but the brilliant songs for the Parks, the World's Fair and movies like Chitty Chitty Bang Bang and The Slipper and The Rose.

GT: How did you involve Richard Sherman in the process?

JJ: First off, without his enthusiastic interest we would not have pursued the project. Richard loved the Mancini and Cole Porter projects we did. When we asked him if he'd appreciate us attempting to arrange the Sherman Brothers he was very enthusiastic! During the process we ran potential songs by him and often played him work in progress arrangements for his thoughts.

GT: Do you have any specific marketing or touring plans?

JJ: These artists are all on their own tours, so we don't see any group shows although Doug Smith (Feed the Birds) and Laurence Juber (Spoonful of Sugar) will play at the opening of the D23 along with Richard, before the screening of The Boys. Laurence Juber, also played a bit of it in the movie.

GT: What has been the most difficult part of the project?

JJ: Not ending up with twice as many songs...literally we could have kept going--in fact we turned many people down. We also have a beautiful version of Lets Go Fly a Kite in the can.
GT: What has been the most fun?

JJ: The most scary and fun? When we finished it and sent it to Richard....waiting and waiting for his response. When the call came and he and his lovely wife Elizabeth were delighted, I felt it was truly mission accomplished. Our goal was to give these men, who have given us all so much love and happiness, just a little thank you. I view any sales or acclaim that come from this album now as icing on the cake. Truly, the most fun has been getting to know Richard and Elizabeth Sherman, and realizing that he is Tigger and everything you would expect from the man who wrote all these beautiful melodies and songs.

One of the best CDs I've bought in a long time.

I bought this CD at the D23 Expo in Anaheim. It was signed by the artist and Robert Sherman himself, so I bought it in the excitement of the night. When I was driving home days later, I thought, well, if I don't like it, I could view it as having bought Robert Sherman's signature.

I played it one night and fell in love. It's like these beautiful songs were made new!!! It's a great CD to listen to when you want to relax and unwind. It is beautiful through and through!
Excellent Value For Money

Wonderful treatment by different guitarists of the music by the Sherman Brothers of (among others) Disney movies fame; the dvd is nice to watch, especially for the Tommy Emmanuel affinado's. The price/quality ratio is excellent.
Picking disney memories ....

The overall impression is a walk back in time, enjoying memories of old Disney movies - tunes revisited. The guitar versions of a handfull of world's most talented guitar pickers brings up the movie images on one hand, and brings a refreshing interpretation of the same tunes on the other.
I recommend this cd for guitar lovers and disney lovers all the same.

The extra DVD is a joy to watch. Mr Sherman sure was happy - watch him hum along with Tommy for example whilst listening to the tune is sheer joyfull video.

Just enjoy this edition, grab the cd/DVD combo while you can: it is worth your while.
